Literature Text
Egypt sat silently along the banks of the Nile River. His silence was never surprising to anyone, of course, but still, it tended to shock those who didn't know him well. Next to him sat Greece, who for once, was awake. His cat purred loudly as it rolled around in the sand in front of them enjoyed the fun of chasing small desert rats around.
"Egypt. Why so quiet?" Greece asked, looking over with no expression what-so-ever. Once he realized he wasn't going to get a response, he looked forward once more toward the Nile. The river's current was slow on this day, and the sun was high at noon. The heat was unbearable to most people.
"Egypt. Have you ever gone swimming in the Mediterranean?" Herakles turned again to face Egypt and stared. Once again he received no answer. "Well, scratch that. Have you ever gone swimming in the Red Sea, and then, just because you are under so much pressure, you swim deeper and deeper. You keep swimming until you can no longer breath, but you don't care?" he did not break his stare and just moved in closer on the quiet country next to him. "Egypt, answer me. I know you want to."
"What's the point in speaking if I know that I'm not going to be listened to?" Egypt mumbled back under his breath in an annoyed tone. Greece's eyes widened and he leaned back a bit into the sand.
"And, to answer your question. Yes, I have. Also, sometimes I wonder why I ever came back to the surface to breath again." he growled, slitting his eyes slightly in anger.
Herakles sighed and put a hand on Egypt's shoulder. "No need to get so snippy, Egypt. I was just asking you a question."
"I-I know…"
"Being so quiet all the time. You're afraid that you won't be able to match up to your mother." Greece said, turning his gaze to his cat, who had caught a small rat and was playing with it.
"…" Egypt said nothing more and just glared up into the sun. He didn't even need to blink as he stared up into the usually blinding light.
"I'll take your silence as a yes, Egypt. Just remember to breath again and again, no matter how intimidated you get. Trust me, I feel the same way." Greece stood, scooped up both the cat and the mouse, and began to walk off down the river. As soon as he was out of ear-shot, Egypt mumbled to himself once more.
"Why should I breath again if nobody will care if I'm gone? Why should I talk if the only thing people will hear is not my voice, but that of my mother's?"
